Preparation
- Control Checks: Adjust your seat, mirrors, and steering wheel for optimal control and visibility.
- Gear Selection: Ensure the vehicle is in the correct gear for the manoeuvre.
- Hand Position: Place your hands on the steering wheel at the ‘ten and two’ or ‘nine and three’ positions.
Observation
- Mirror Check: Regularly check your rear-view and side mirrors to understand the traffic behind and beside you.
- Blind Spot Check: Turn your head to check blind spots that mirrors can’t cover.
- Signal Intentions: Use indicators well in advance to communicate your intentions to other road users.
- Environmental Awareness: Continuously scan the road ahead, checking for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. Assess potential hazards.
Manoeuvre
- Smooth Execution: Start the manoeuvre gently, using smooth acceleration and steering movements.
- Speed Control: Adjust your speed appropriately for the manoeuvre and road conditions.
- Ongoing Observation: Keep checking mirrors and blind spots throughout the manoeuvre.
- Completion: Ensure the manoeuvre is completed safely and smoothly, merging seamlessly back into the flow of traffic.
